Alkaline refractories are magnesite-based refractories (MgO). Alkaline refractories are refractories that are predominantly made of non-acidic oxides. At high temperatures, alkaline refractories exhibit excellent resistance to chemical corrosion of slag, liquid or solid oxides, dust, and smoke. As a result, these refractory materials are employed when one or more of these criteria exist.

As alkaline refractory technology has improved, so has the range of applications for these materials. For example, We could mention steel furnaces with siliceous (acidic) slags. High-speed alkali refractories are evolving and improving to keep up with the fast changes in industrial technology.
